Oral Hygiene Summer Tips For The Family

Don’t let Summer get the best of your family’s oral hygiene!

Summer can be an exciting and fun time but also stressful in different ways. In addition to planning travel and dealing with the heat, for families and parents, schedules are often thrown off due to school being out and having kids at home. Penn Dental Medicine has compiled the following summertime tips for you and your family, to ensure you maintain your habit of good oral hygiene throughout the season.

Oral Health Tips for Summertime

Summer-TipsStart Off Fresh

It is suggested that toothbrushes be replaced every three to four months and even earlier if the brusher has been sick. Why not start off the season with a FRESH toothbrush! Planning on going out of town this summer? Don’t forget to purchase travel-size products like mouthwash, floss and toothpaste, as well as travel toothbrushes for the whole family.

Although your day-to-day routine may change on summer vacation, don’t forget to brush and floss regularly to keep your teeth looking healthy. Parents should make sure children incorporate dental maintenance in their day and nighttime routines during the school year and throughout the summer!

Get Scheduled

School being out for the summer presents an excellent opportunity to take advantage of free-time by scheduling your family to see the dentist for routine check-ups and cleanings. The best time to schedule your dental visits are at the beginning of the summer so if any underlying problems present themselves, there’s still two months to plan on treating them. Early detection also decreases the chances of a painful dental crisis emerging while on vacation.

Eat Healthy

Having more downtime at home over the summer means more snacking. Rather than  keeping your pantry stocked with processed foods and sugary treats, be sure to take advantage of the summer’s rich harvest by keeping your kitchen stocked with healthy fruits and vegetables.

Don’t forget to drink lots of water and stay hydrated this summer. To keep teeth healthy, stay away from acidic, sugary sodas and juices. For those seeking flavor, try flavoring water with fruit or mint as a refreshing alternative to unhealthy beverages.

Be Prepared

Before leaving for a trip be sure to keep a first-aid kit handy and to stock up on travel size products like ibuprofen, bandaids and Neosporin. With the excitement of vacation, kids and adults can’t escape the fact that someone may encounter a dental emergency amidst all the fun.

In case an emergency does arise, be sure to keep your doctor and dentist’s contact information programmed in your phone.
