Get Dental Care for Veterans at Penn Dental Medicine

“You protected us. Now it’s our turn to protect you.”

Female vet in fatigues holds her daughter outside and smiles because she has dental care for veterans without insurance at PDM.

At Penn Dental Medicine, our mission is simple: we want to keep our veterans smiling. That’s why we’ve developed special dental care for veterans that understands your unique needs. It’s our way of showing our deep appreciation and saying thank you for your service and sacrifices that kept us safe.

We know it’s easy to put off dental care and that veterans may have unique reasons to do so. But did you know that more veterans (56%) report active tooth decay than nonveterans (37%), and 42% report gum problems or bone loss around their teeth compared to 27% of nonveterans? Not only that, but did you know oral health plays a role in your overall health—affecting the heart, lungs, and more?

Visiting the dentist is even more critical than ever. Here is what we’ve done to make it easier for veterans to get the care they need.

The Benefits of Dental Care for Veterans at Penn Dental Medicine

Our veteran-friendly dental care starts from your first contact with us and follows you every step of your experience with us:

1. An exclusive, veterans-only appointment phone number.

Call 215-573-VETS (8387) and identify yourself as a veteran to make appointments or to ask questions about veterans discounts, dental care, and other benefits. This special line allows us to provide you with the attention you deserve.

2. Comprehensive dental care for veterans provides every service veterans need.

An older vet stands in front of a U.S. flag in a black T-shirt and Vietnam Veterans hat, and wonders where to find a dentist for veterans.

Penn Dental Medicine can provide all the care you need, all in one place, with the latest technology and techniques:

  • General dentistry: For preventive services including teeth cleaning, checking soft tissue, and screening for oral cancer and other potential problems; and restorative treatments including fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures, and implants.
  • Endodontics: For treatment of inflamed or infected tissue in your teeth with root canals, pulp therapies, surgery, and more.
  • Oral medicine: For treating a wide variety of facial and oral cavity conditions including oral mucosal diseases, orofacial pain conditions, and temporomandibular disorders (TMJ/TMD); and oral complications related to cancer treatments and care for patients with complex medical problems.
  • Orthodontics: For treating improper bites and irregularity of teeth and jaws with braces and other interventions.
  • Pediatric dentistry: For treating the youngest patients once their teeth appear.
  • Periodontics: For prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions and diseases of the gums.
  • Prosthodontics: For repair and replacement of chipped, damaged, or missing teeth with prosthetic substitutes.
  • Radiology: For radiographic services for the dental and maxillofacial region, including the teeth, the upper jaw, the lower jaw, and the temporomandibular joints (TMJ).

We coordinate any care you may need between departments. You don’t have to worry about it.

3. A stress-free treatment environment and accommodations.

A veteran in a wheelchair has a consultation for his dental needs.

Many people suffer from anxiety when they go to the dentist. But veterans may have increased fears or phobias (because of PTSD or other service-related disabilities) that make visiting the dentist challenging. At Penn Dental Medicine, we take your concerns seriously and have a Personal Care Center for persons with disabilities and fears to make the visit as comfortable as possible.

Among its many amenities, the center includes:

  • A quiet room where patients sensitive to light and sound can receive treatment in a space equipped with low lighting designed to help prevent overstimulation. This room is also accessible from the hallway to prevent any anxiety triggers that might arise from passing through our main reception area.
  • Hover chair rooms for patients who are not ambulatory.
  • A wheelchair lift room.
  • Space for patients who need dental care in a bed or on a stretcher.
  • Availability of nitrous oxide, an inhalation sedative that relaxes the patient without putting them to sleep.

As you can see, when it comes to dentists for veterans, we take everything about you and your situation seriously, so you can get the care you need, how you need it.

4. Dental care for veterans at affordable costs.

At Penn Dental Medicine, we are in a unique position to offer dental services at lower rates because we are a teaching dental clinic associated with the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, to make sure there are no barriers to care, we offer veterans an additional 20% discount on all services they receive from us. This discount dental care for veterans is also beneficial in reducing patient costs when we provide dental care for veterans without insurance.
